What is Obesity?

Obesity is when your weight is higher than what is considered as a healthy weight for a given height.  One of the ways it can be measured is by determining your Body Mass Index. Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a measure of your body fat based on your height and your weight. BMI is also one of the key qualifiers for determining weight loss options you may be eligible for.

  • Underweight is BMI <18.5
  • Healthy Weight is 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight is 25 – 29.9
  • Obese is 30+

How Does My Weight Affect My Health?

If your BMI is high, you are at increased risk for several diseases including:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Breathing issues
  • Certain cancers

Excess weight takes a toll on your body in other ways, including:

  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Back pain
  • Depression
  • Infertility
  • Stroke

Obesity can shorten your life span by more than a decade. Losing even a moderate amount of weight, like 5 – 10 percent of your total body weight, can produce health benefits like reduced blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugars.

Whether you’re looking to lose 20 pounds or you’re interested in bariatric surgery, St. Elizabeth Physicians has a program that can help you reach your weight-loss goals.
